Very interesting, you are obviously right, the ecosystem has to have a certain extension if it includes larger, roaming animals. Still, as you point out, at lower levels of the food chain, a higher degree of localization occurs.

The first time you see a cougar, will probably be the last thing you see. There have been several attacks by cougars lately and they (Lunch), never saw them coming. No shortage of cougars around here.
