The occurrence of something like this shouldn't surprise anyone. Before mad cow disease was even discovered, kuru was discovered in New Guinea. It is a severe, eventually fatal, neurological disease resulting from eating the brain of another human who has kuru. The tribes it occurred in on New Guinea were cannibalistic.
