I love good water fountains, the kind that deliver high pressure, actually cold water! Especially after exercise on a hot day.....

Rock Creek Park in DC is a great park, too. It is wilder than Central Park, but not as integrated into the urban landscape. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful place, with many trails and bike paths, many picnic areas, horseback riding, a fine nature center, and one of the best zoos in the country. It stretches from about Silver Spring, a suburb right outside of Northwest Washington, down to lower Georgetown, coming out not far from the Kennedy Center.

The National Zoo was one of the first to try to open things up and place the animals in mini- habitats, for context. It has been especially successful with the big cats, the birds, and the aquatic animals, like seals.

One of the interesting things is that as one comes to the end of the Rock Creek Parkway, one is led to various sorts of parkland near the monuments. There is boating on the Potomac; a lovely greenbelt walk along the river, across from the Watergate; West Potomac Park, with playing fields and the FDR Memorial; the Tidal Basin, with paddle boats, cherry blossoms, and good views of several monuments; on around to the National Mall, the Reflecting Pool, the Washington Monument Grounds.

On the Virginia side of the river, the George Washington Parkway has lovely parkland along the river, with occasional larger parks incorporating woodland...........
