Recession? Whut recession? LOL. I went to a job fair this morning; this is what I saw:
A pretty good turn out. If I were a personnel director, there were probably 10 or 12 that I would hire on the spot; well-dressed, well-groomed professional-looking people (I would include myself in that category, if I may).
I spoke with one of them, a young woman whose father recently died of cancer. The family is having financial problems. She was well-dressed and well-spoken but apparently lacks some job skills common in today's market (software proficiency, for example).
What really impressed me was the level of assistance available for these people. State assistance in various forms for training, etc. She wants to pursue a career in nursing. There is currently a $5,000 bounty (I mean, bonus) in this town for nurses, and the state will help pay for most, in some cases all, of the training required. They'll even help pay for the gasoline. So there's plenty of help out there.
What really galled me was the number of people (mostly young, but some older) who looked like they live in caves. Shirt-tails hanging out, dirty tennis shoes, uncombed hair, stuff like that. Really. And they probably moan, "I can't find a job."
Duh.
All the training aside, I really think these people need to learn to compete. It's not dog-eat-dog out there, but by golly, if you want a bigger bone you need to put up a fight for it.

PB

P.S.: GRRRRRRRR!!!
