BOSTON -- A severe downturn in the automatic test equipment business prompted Teradyne Inc. here today (March 8) to reduce its quarterly forecast and slash its temporary workforce by 1,400 employees

The supplier of ATE and other products also implemented a hiring freeze, production furloughs in some areas, and delayed several capital spending projects.

The company originally was supposed to earn about $0.30 per share for the first quarter, but sales were going to be down about 20% from the $789 million figure posted in the fourth quarter of last year.

Now, its sales for the quarter will decline 35% sequentially. It is now projected to earn $0.25 a share.
