They measure 3' up from the ground where the tree will be cut and want another 16' of clear tree, no branches. The they can peel two 8' wide veneer strips. The crotches and smaller logs go for gunstocks. It takes generations. I almost planted some walnuts but my wife has horses and walnut will kill horses. I saw a deal our sanitary system did. Took 360 acres and planted trees and fertilized them with sludge. The 5% they didn't fertilize with sludge as a control group has about 1/3 of the growth. The rows were planted with a walnut every third tree. After X years 1/3 of the trees will be sold as fire wood. X2 the same. Then there will be a stand of wanuts worth a bunch.
