The US has never even thought about socialism. The social welfare introduced during the New Deal contrasts with fascism and communism that rose in many other countries during the Great Depression. The Great Society failed because it did not balance social welfare with incentives for self reliance. The bipartisan support for free trade requires that government acknowledge that while free trade is good for society and the world economy viewed in their entirety and free trade is particularly beneficial to business and entrepreeurs, free trade is very harmful to the lower end of the labor spectrum. These laborers lose higher paying jobs to workers with low wage rates in other countries. The government must support tax relief and minimum social services such as medical care and scholarships to higher education for the lower and middle income people and their children.
