you are so correct about joe being a catcher. but imo, joe was paralyzed with fear going in to the foreman fight. i am not saying he did not fight bravely. but he had that bugged-eyed frog look.

against ali, joe was not afraid. joe wanted to take ali's head off. ali made fun of joe, humiliated him in public. joe wanted a great big piece of ali's behind.

but against foreman, joe was gulping and crossing himself the minute he came out of his corner for the opening bell. and when big george whacked him, joe literally left his feet, then hopped for awhile. do you remember that? joe's fear made those punches murderous.

ali did not fear george. ali was determined more than anything or anyone. he was not motivated by anger and hatred (as i say joe was against ali), and he was not handicapped by fear (as i say joe was against foreman). ali was in a spiritual battle. he believed he had a higher power with him in that fight. he prevailed more than anything else. he used his mind and his body in perfect tandem. anything less would have resulted in a foreman victory that night in zaire.

"How do you think Teofilo(sp?Cuba) would have faired against those 3"

wasn't his last name stevenson, or something like that? man, he was talented. used to leap over the ropes, didn't he, or am i getting him confused with someone else? you know, i can't do much more than speculate on how he would have fared. my guess would be that we would be speaking of him today as we speak of these three others. but we'd still be speaking of ali as the man.

:)
