Qualcomm Licenses MP3 Patents For Chips, Software
TECH WEB, 3/8/2001 9:30:00 PM

Mar 08, 2001 (Tech Web - CMP via COMTEX) -- Qualcomm Inc. has reached an agreement with Thomson Multimedia and Fraunhofer Institute to license MP3 patents.

The company will incorporate the technology in its Qualcomm CDMA Technologies (QCT) integrated circuits and system software for 2G and 3G wireless handsets.

The deal will help Qualcomm (stock: QCOM) fulfill its intention to support wireless Internet and multimedia capabilities in its chipsets and software.

The company's MP3 player program is shipping now as part of the Wireless Launchpad software for the MSM5100, MSM5200, and MSM3300 chip sets.

The MSM3300 set is shipping to manufacturers who plan to introduce MP3-enabled handsets late this year, according to Mark Frankel, director of product management for QCT.

MSM3300 is the San Diego company's first chipset that integrates a GPS receiver for position/location services and meets the Federal Communications Commission's E-911 mandate.

The chipset also supplies a mass-storage device controller to provide an interconnection to a larger memory space to store CD-quality music or mapping data from a geographical navigation service.>>;More from EE Times

This company is all of a sudden getting a lot of coverage on some of the threads I look at. The CEO is John Major who was ex-Wireless Knowledge. They claim 128Kbps over a good number of major cities. Seems to be a wireless modem for notebooks.

Are you familiar? What system is it using, CDMA? Any other views? I haven't looked into the monthly cost yet.

I wish we didn't have to wait another six months for 1X from VZ or PCS. This delay is really miserable since if they really do achieve 128Kbps people will start using it and it may be easier to sign up than for a mobile phone which is somewhat more difficult to get than a handgun!!!

Best regards,

L
