Scumbria RE..Thanks to Clinton vetoing the Newt tax cut, we ran a large surplus the last few years.<<<

What do you mean by we? The gov. ran a surplus the the average family increased his debt. Personal debt is at an all time high. In addition our trade deficit is at a all time high. These two are far more important to the economy than the gov. debt.

If there is disciplined leadership at the top, deficits are not necessary.

True, that is why GW proposed a 4% budget increase next yr. 4% should easily match inflation, and with the massive increase in spending the last 3 yrs. should be more than enough. Any business man would know that spending is the major cause of deficits. Any business has to be lean and mean to make profits. Why is the gov. any different?

He is going for the standard Republican "popularity boost through irresponsible tax-cuts" approach to fiscal mismanagement.<<<<<<

Don't look now, but 90% of the time any and every business has to do that once in awhile to regain profitability. You just can't keep spending like there is no tomorrow. Government spending went up 14% the last 3 yrs over inflation, an overbearing increase and has to be corrected before European or Japanese stagflation sets in. You may be a fine chip designer, but you don't seem to have a clue as to the relationship of spending to profitability. Spending is far more important than revenues. Many companies can run on half the revenue if they cut costs enough. On the other hand, if you let spending get out of control, no amount of revenue can save you because the competition will eventually eat you for lunch.
