I believe that while history doesn't repeat, it may rhyme.

I have no problem about looking for patterns and trying to understand the forces operating within them. I do have a problem with mining a pattern and applying it to the present without recognizing that there are many, many differences in the context and forces operating now. If nothing else, the technology context is massively different and this has major impacts on virtually all aspects of the situation.

Re: Dent and Economic cycles

The problem I see with tying economic cycles to population ages is that today's retiring boomers will live much longer than any in history, and I expect the spending habits to be much different than any in history. Many retirees nowadays seem to be better off financially than those working. My parents for one are more free-spending now that they've retired than I can ever remember them being.

I know, it's anecdotal, but I think there's considerable reason to believe it'll be different this time.
