Destination Foundation has announced that microsoftSF and Metreon -- A Sony Entertainment Center will, for the second year, sponsor and host Tails of The City, a truly unique, only-in-San Francisco exhibition, auction and event benefiting Destination Foundation. More than 130 celebrities, local artists, high-tech heroes, dot com gurus, designers, architects and other imaginative types are donating their creative talents to interpret computer mice donated by Microsoft. The mice can be seen in person at microsoftSF at Metreon from March 23 through May 17, a total of seven weeks. This is the second annual Tails of the City event.
In its first year, approximately $80,000 was raised from Tails of the City. Proceeds benefit Destination Foundation, a non-profit organization founded in 1998. The Foundation grants dream trips to men and women in the San Francisco Bay Area gay community who have been diagnosed with a terminal or life-threatening illness such as breast cancer or AIDS. These dream trips provide meaningful change and the ability to improve health, renew spirit and help each traveler gain a healthier, happier attitude.
More than 130 mouse artists, celebrities, and legends from the Bay Area and beyond have designed mice for the 2001 Tails of the City event. Celebrity artists include: Martha Stewart, Lily Tomlin, Judge Judy & Judge Jerry Sheindlin, Mr. Rogers, ``Zippy the Pinhead'' artist Bill Griffith, actress Megan Mullally, the cast of ``Will & Grace,'' Bonnie Raitt, international marine artist Wyland, Judith Light, Florence Henderson, Nia Peeples, the casts of Showtime Networks Inc.'s ``Queer As Folk'' and ``Tales of the City'' (Armistead Maupin), Kenny Scharf (Absolut Vodka artist), Wavy Gravy, J. Otto Seibold and Vivian Walsh (local artists) and many more.

Bids for any of the more than 130 mice will be accepted beginning March 23, online at www.tailsofthecity.org where photos of the mice can be seen. A benefit auction and gala cocktail party will take place on May 17 from 7pm to 10pm at microsoftSF after a panel of celebrity judges, including Co-Chair Armistead Maupin, award prizes in the following categories: Most Cheesy, Most Dot-Comical, Most Tail-Spinning, Most Tail-Telling, People's Choice and Judge's Choice (the highest online bid will set the opening bid price for the evening of May 17). The highest online bidder will be notified. Online bids will not be accepted after May 16 at 5pm PST. Winning bidders who are not present will receive their mice within approximately two weeks.
Participants from last year include Bill Gates (Microsoft), Helen Hunt (Academy Award winner), Kate Spade (fashion guru), Matt Groening/James L. Brooks (``The Simpsons''), Wavy Gravy (60's Beat icon), Stanley Mouse (Grateful Dead album cover artist), Susan Kare (Apple icon legend) Bonnie Raitt (Grammy winner) and many others. Bill Gates' personal mouse with signature was auctioned for more than $5,000.
Mouse artists are encouraged to design or deconstruct their mouse in any way, using any materials they choose and then naming their piece. Some of the entries this year include, ``There Goes The Neighborhood,'' ``Road Kill,'' ``Chia® Mouse,'' ``If At First You Don't Succeed,'' ``CarpalMouse®,'' ``Field Mouse,'' ``Mouse of Wax,'' ``Tiffany Mouse,'' and ``Acupuncture Mouse.'' The public is invited to attend the May 17th auction and cocktail reception at microsoftSF. Tickets are $100 and can be purchased by calling Destination Foundation at 415/ 970-3333, or by going to www.tailsofthecity.org where additional information and photos of the mice can be seen.
