Just this week, Abby Joseph Cohen, Goldman Sachs' chief investment strategist, joined Merrill Lynch's David Bowers and Morgan Stanley Dean Witter's Jay Pelosky in advising clients to buy stocks following weeks of market weakness, which was spurred by chronic concerns about the softening economy.

''My best investment would have been to stay out of the market,'' said Steve Holmes, a 41 year-old construction manager, who stood in front of the Nasdaq market site in New York.
