Thomas M,

<the point of an industry is to make money, not to sell widgets. In fact, the PC industry used to publish sales figures in dollars, until 3 years ago when sales began their decline. Of course, Intel investors fell for this scam, and continued bidding up the stock foolishly.>

You are correct that the point of an industry is to make money and for investors to be aware of scams. However, making money is not just a function of sales (units or dollars ), you must also consider the cost and expense involved. For example, in this industry, going to 300mm wafers may reduce certain costs by 33%. This may offset reduced sales in many cases. Add to this increased volumes and it gets even more interesting.
