<<Al Gore garnered 1.5 million or so more votes than his opponent, but GWB won the greater number of states.>>

Wow!!! It's up to a million and a half already. If we wait long enough he might double Bush's totals.

If you look at what has happened in Texas, I would not be so sanguine about the Hispanic vote, which is well- established in the state, and relatively middle class. Dubya had it locked up. A lot of the same kind of people will vote Republican in other states. In Florida, Cubans are overwhelmingly Republican. Counting on the Hispanic vote is foolish.

Now, it is true enough that the exurbs of Boston are affecting the political climate in New Hampshire. They also, however, represent a depletion of the Democratic vote in Massachusetts. That is part of the problem (aside from the difficulty of predicting in- migration patterns in the future. One regions gain is another's loss. For example, companies from Silicon Valley are moving into the Research Triangle in North Carolina. That adds some number of liberals and moderates to the electorate. However, it also takes them out of the Bay Area. I would not venture to predict how that aspect will shake out.......
