When you are young, you assume that things are more malleable than they are. Thus, if there are social problems, it is because someone is preventing concerted action to alleviate them. When you are older, you realize that it is hard to solve large problems; that people have to take responsibility for themselves, at some point; and that the best thing one can do is promote economic growth and try to do a good job on the tasks commonly assigned to government, like defense and education.
