GV,

I once ran in a 10K vs. Henry Rono, and it was quite obvious that the man was not on the same plane as myself. (At one time I was one of the top 100 mountain runners in the world.) He sprinted the entire race, and barely broke a sweat. I never saw him after the first 1/8 mile.

Since then I have put on about 30 pounds, and had the privilege of being at the Stanford track on several occasions when a Kenyan named "Keino" was training there.

Again I had the feeling that these people were fundamentally different physiological makeups from myself.

GVTucker,

re:"The Kenyans are vastly superior in marathons. And yet they are horrid at the sprints."

WRONG AGAIN!!!

The kenyans are the best at sprinting.

But only after they have run many miles :-)

And El Gerrouj is better isn't he, so he muct be black!!!

regards,

Kash

GVTucker: Aren't all blacks alike?

Maybe they are just more un-alike. Most of the fastest sprinters being black doesn't necesserally mean that
the average black is faster than the average white.
Top athletes are an extreme selection of a population. A wider spread (genetic) distribution can lead to a better (very, very small) selection than a selection out of a higher average. (like bin splits?)

But culture (tradition/technique/training/shall_I_add_doping?) is obviously more important. Some years ago, I believe around 50% of the 100m Olympic finalists were blacks from the Caribbean (or at least born there). Unexplainable by genetics, I think.

Regards, Boris

GVTucker,<<<Blacks also dominate the long distances. The Kenyans are vastly superior in marathons. And yet they are horrid at the sprints.

But that doesn't make any sense. Aren't all blacks alike?>>>

Does any of this make sense. After millions of years of evolution and over 30 years after Kathy Switzer forced her way into the NYC marathon, you see in the most recent NYC marathon some 30 or 40 elite men's runners lead a pack of about 25 thousand runners. After a few minutes, they are followed by a pack of elite female runners running ahead of the rest of the 25,000 in the field.

Is this the best that evolution can do to differentiate the sexes wrt long distance running?
