Lars,
>>not fair to charge the same to rookies as to mvp's.

They all become mvp's when they pay up.

Seriously, they have a thousand and something patents, and the most essential patent are may be a dozen or less. No other company's most essentail patent matches up with any of those top dozen patents in their relevance and importance. They would have to maintain a price list for those remaining patents and try to protect them continuously, which would prove to be huge energy consuming activity. So, IMO this is the reason for the 'whole enchillada'. I think as a shareholder, its is a better way to go instead of pissing time and money away trying to keep an eye on the whole world all the time.

A suggestion would be for anyone considering the word "fair" to please read the patent structure WRT GSM at the following URL supplied on this thread earlier:
www-edocs.unimaas.nl
Up to 29%, not 20% of ASP for GSM IPR. And the players systematically excluded the licensing to competitors where possible. Certainly there are other issues besides IPR which can be leveraged for a royalty deal, but requiring the entire portfolio to be licensed is no different than bundling a browser against an OEM's wishes and making them pay for it as well. Propagating the useage of one's patents is assisted by bundling, hence growing one's value chain by that useage. MVP's have an advantage by cross-licensing, offering distribution or manufacturing incentives, etc. They too can charge what they think their assets are worth.
