>was this your first hard drive install?<

Hi Mark, this is my 2nd drive install, however, my first on cloning the original drive. The first drive was the 6 gig drive where I simply installed all the original programs again. Had too much data this time...alright, I confess... lots of MP3 files <gg> and no back up, so had to clone it.

I highly recommend a Maxtor drive. The software is simply great. The installation instructions (1 double sided sheet) that came with the drive are excellent - very well written. I hought an OEM drive (comes in plastic bag) saving 30% from retail package that comes with same drive in fancy box with a booklet. The drive (7200 rpm) is very quiet, but much warmer to the touch than the 6 gig drive which I assume is 5400.

For those here wanting to do-it-yourself installation, here are some tips:

1. Open the computer and figure where to mount the drives. You may need brackets (I did).
2. Do the cloning with new drive as slave drive . This is important because MaxBlast clones better with new drive as D drive instead of C drive (the original drive). See instructions on how to set jumper such that Maxtor drive is slave drive.
3. Set CMOS to boot of MaxBlast diskette which is in 3.25 floppy drive.
4. Partition the drive using MaxBlast.
5. Clone the C drive to Maxtor drive... follow the screen instructions... very straight forward.
6. OK, at this point, you'd need to make the new drive as your boot drive i.e. master drive. Set the jumper to make it master drive. Also set the jumper on your old drive to make it slave drive.

Viola... the drive boots up.. with lots of space to clog up with more songs and stock research web pages <GG>!
