Now you get it. The question is not if Yahoo is useful or not (it is). The question is how much revenue can they realistically generate and thus what is the proper market cap... I'd say somewhere around $1-3 billion.

Yahoo does have top notch technology. It seems they have not made the effort to market that technology for a fee to those that are potential buyers. It is difficult (lack of visibility "analyst talk") to put a value on this until one has made an excellent5 attempt at marketing the product for a fee. Many of the internet firms have trained internet users to expect a variety of services for free so I can't say how well this will initially or in time would be accepted as a change from free. Yahoo is looking for a CEO and I really would like the job and believe I could do it well. Technology improvements have to continue but I am sure there are people that are already hired or may be hired to keep Yahoo state of the art.

the measure should be how much they would cost to replicate. $100m, $500m ?

I am not sure if this is a good metric although it may be. The focus was always on the advertising model. I believe you are on to the right valuation idea although replication cost is one factor you may have meant this, but the brand names has a lot of value to.

But are they worth $10 billion, or $100 billion a year ago ?



No...nothing in this sector was worth anything where it was trading a year ago. If the fee based model is accepted and advertising continues but not as the main focus, there could be a great deal of upside valuation from here.
