I have not done a statistical correlation but have noticed that Japanese market usually follows the NAZ lead the next day. I also read commentary from Japan on their market every day and there is frequent mention of strength or weakness in the NAZ as a key factor behind the movement of Japanese tech stocks -- a big part of their market.

BTW both the Nikkei and the NAZ boomed in 1999 and both tanked in 2000. Japanese stocks face major problems in addition to the NAZ bear, but the latter still is a big factor in the Nikkei's recent collapse IMHO
