>>I'll concede that much of this is open to interpretation of vendor spin, and keeping track of the evolving lexicon of the industry, not to mention the actual underlying technologies<<

Yes, sometimes I think keeping track of this lexicon is a full time job...<g>

>>In one statement you speak of multi-service switching. Here, I suspect you are speaking of those services which folks can and have actually used, such as legacy ATM, MPLS, and I'll alsoo include basic IP, albeit at very high speeds (POS) as a part of that suite.<<

Just to make sure....This POS refers to packet over sonet, right?

>>In fact Tellabs actually has a DCS that does this using optical interfaces, too. I believe it's their 6700 box.<<

If you are referring to the Tellabs product that has undergone trials and has now just begun to be shipped to a few clients (and whose revenue recognition issue was part of the reason for Tellabs new lower guidance last week) I believe that would be the 6500 as the 6700 is really not out yet.

"Field trials for the TITAN 6700 optical switch are expected to begin in second quarter 2001 with availability in the fourth quarter of 2001."

While we are on this TLAB subject, my limited understanding is that while both the 6500 and the 6700 can be construed as competitive products to Ciena's CoreDirector, the 6500 is more of a "dumb" (non-intelligent) competitor (DCS) and the 6700 an intelligent (switching) one. I'd be interested in your views on this (although since there seems to be very little detailed information on the 6700, I will understand if you refrain from commenting.)

Here are the features of the 6500:

And this is all I could find for the 6700:

And here is a Lightreading article that mentions both of the products:

>>In any event, the front ends to these boxes may appear to be oo, and in many cases they are (on the i/o side) but in the background there is a lot of 'e' going on, to be sure.<<

As an aside, even the "all optical" Corvis is rumored to be developing an o-e-o switch to compete with the CoreDirector, SN16000, Aurora et al crowd....

Thanks
