I think the switch to 25% capital is totally irresponsible... the talk has been of tightening requirements, now they tighten up on the little guys and give the bigger players - not necessarily the more experienced ones, just the ones with more capital to begin with - a longer noose to hang themselves with.

I know several traders who make a decent living trading with about 20k in equity, giving them 40k a day to daytrade with - more than enough to make a days pay...it's definitely going to hurt them!

it could be related to the coming of single-stock futures.
the SEC and CFTC are supposed to jointly regulate SSF's, where the margin reqts
(at least initially) are supposed to be on the same level as current equity-based option margin levels.
