Re: Linux

I disagree. Linux's future is very bright and will coexist quite nicely with a robust future for Windows. What won't survive is proprietary flavors of Unix. IBM has basically admitted defeat with AIX and is now very committed to using Linux as a tool to unseat SUNW/Solaris from Unix accounts and my sense is that HWP and CPQ are not far behind in reaching this same conclusion. DELL, of course, never had their own proprietary Unix and so is already in the Linux camp for customers wanting a Unix based OS, as is INTC. This will make SUNW even more of the odd-man-out than they are currently, but that seems to suit them.

On the academic front, Linux is already the de facto standard in university computer science departments around the world and this will ensure a continual supply of Linux talent entering the workforce for many years to come. BSD is clearly on the wane here.

No way. Yahoo use *nix because it's cheaper and more stable in the long run, and it still is. More stable means more customers that are actually using the services. I get to know more open-source programmers all the time, so the developer base is increasing all the time. Linux doesn't need business. Most open-source programmers I know work with Windows at work. Most very good programmers that leave universities today get Linux related jobs. There is a big demand for Linux expertise in Europe. So Linux will continue to evolve - Linux related business or not, but earning money on Linux is as easy as never before. And please remember - it's MUCH cheaper to teach somebody to become a Linux Guru than a Windows guru. I don't know any very good Windows programmers that are younger than 30 years old. I know several Linux gurus than are younger than 25 years old. The PC slowdown can be much harder to MSFT than you might imagine. And I believe that the Office XP end-user licensing program might be the end to Microsoft Office as the primary office suite in private homes. And OpenOffice will probably take over. Lars.

>Yahoo slowdown is a precursor to the end of Linux/BSD

exactly. The zilla "e-crap" and "penguin" league had their 5 minutes of fame. As the going gets tough, things will hinge around the big boys. AFAIK yhoo has been flawed from the word go --if you dont believe it go back and check my 1998-1999 posts :-)
