I have seen the attitude you describe and I can only think of two ways to explain it- stupidity or some form of "paybacks" at an emotional level (I went through it so these children should go through it). It's a very weird way of looking at the world. I am into innovation- technical, social, whatever! If it looks like there is a better way to do something I want to try it. Mr. X would tell you I am a little slow on technology- but I am only slow compared to HIM. I don't think I am particularly slow compared to anyone else.

I don't understand why people think letting children get ass whupped is going to teach them anything except that, as you say, might makes right- and that the bigger and fiercer you are, the more in charge you are. This is NOT a lesson I want taught in my class, in my school, or in my world. So I urge you E- tell everyone your story. And tell them about Olweus- tell people that schools (American schools!) are implementing Olweus' programs- and they are having success with these programs. We can make a difference. I know I've made a difference in so many ways- and as I meet more people, and become more knowledgeable, I make a bigger and bigger difference. I think I will go into administration one day- and then...watch out.
