I'm still not sure if Ronnie actually meant to do it or not, but by his spending he brought to bear on the Soviet Union America's strongest weapon- -it's economic system, and hit it at its weakest point- -it's economic system. And it worked; the Soviet Union collapsed. You'd still be paying for a bloated military budget had he not done that. I'm sure Reagan didn't know if Star Wars would work or not, but neither did the Soviets, and they couldn't take the chance it might. They had to race.
