Your worries are unfounded. The difference between a cell phone and PDA will gradually diminish. There are already cell phones with PDA functions and PDAs with phone functions. Both cell phones and PDAs have DSPs, whether it's QCOM's, TI's, or both. As a QCOM shareholder, you actually want the current trend to accelerate. You want every cell phone and PDA to be CDMA enabled. QCOM will collect royalties on all of them and sell chips into many of them.

The real interesting question in all of this is whether PALM, Handspring or other PDA manufacturers will be able to compete with a PDA enabled cell phone made by a handset manufacturer. IMO, they will get killed by the major handset makers whose volumes dwarf PALM's, Handspring's and Rimm's. The economies of scale will once again prevail. At least PALM will prosper with the success of their OS, but I don't know what will happen the others in 3-5 years.

best,
microe
