I subscribe to R. Hahn's service and he plots the margin debt level each week vs the major indexes. The data is from the Federal Reserve. I think it is available at their website but I will ask Hahn to provide the link.
The number is "Reverse RP's with Brokers and Dealers and Loans to Purchase and Carry Securities". It is an absolute number representing the total amount of money on loan by the government to hold stocks.

In March 2000 at the Naz top this amount was approx. $160 B
As of March 2, 2001 it is $203 B

The $ 203 B is up $ 20 B from the week earlier.

When margin calls kick in this time its going to be much worse than in March 2000.
