Michael, it doesn't look to me that the composite number you (and Hahn?) are referring to is what people normally think of as "margin debt." The significance of the number you're using is hard for me to assess at all, frankly.

Here's a link to an article that gives the figures and other details for the Nasdaq and NYSE.

As you will see, the numbers and overall impression conform to sunshadow's observations and statements. I'm just about to PM the normally informative fellow who posted the article for a precise source/date.

As the article points out, the "margin business" has slacked off so much that it's apparently putting pressure on earnings at some OLB's, which had a nice revenue stream coming margin interest back in the day.
