OLDTRADER, Yes, we have good people, but a bad system.
When they elect party leaders they have runoffs until they get 50% + 1 vote and that is the winner.
For the people we get the winner is the guy with the most votes, period.
Often the winner has 20% of the popular vote and the next guy 18, 16, 15, 13 etc to total 100% Since voter apathy is high here we often get only 40-50% of voters going to the polls.
That system is ripe for abuse as the socialist and liberal parties are so well organised that they get a higher % of their voters out. Net result is we get terrible socialist and liberal governments elected as well as dangerous vote splits among the various conservative(republican = conservative).
If the people were given choices they would soon get rid of the liberals, however the liberals are not that stupid. There are no recall provisions in federal politics.
Even with fraud the prime minister cannot be recalled(the situation we have now, smoking gun and all)

The net result is we have governments like South America. When there is a change, hundreds of party cronies are fired and new ones hired. Usually these cronies are on the payroll and do not work.

People here are so badly disencfranchised that most have given up.

I am sure your son in law will agree to some of what I say.
