sam, I heard this one explained. It is a stretch involving loss of childcare credit in toto when the waitress gets a raise above 25K. That is true and an abomination like the marriage penalty. George Will had a better example this morning about a couple--husband 20 year policeman, wife 20 year school teacher with combine income of $120K or so. They are in the top 6% of earners nationally and are in 39.6 bracket. They are the constituency for the Bush cut even though they are both democrats. These are the folks Gephardt claims will buy a Lexus with their windfall. Thats why the tax cut in some form will pass. Cary make actually get an additional rate which would take these folks down to 33 while leaving those above a certain threshold at 35. mike
