I've been discussing this via email with a high school buddy who is now a professional economist. He pointed out that economists aren't passive observers - the job of economists is to predict the future as a way of assisting governments and businesses make decisions. And there is a tendency to tell people what they want to hear in order to get hired.

I wouldn't say that the business(es) of maintaining the currency and funding the government are "disconnected with economics" but certainly it is (they are) only indirectly connected with private enterprise.

The good news is that after my buddy studied economics he quit being a Socialist/liberal, and now votes Republican. Libertarian would be better, but poco a poco.
