I don't "do" margin myself, but in a market with total cap of about $11.3 Trillions, if indeed the total customers margins is just $200 Billion (1.76% of total cap) it is not excessive. Of some concern should be that the margin as a percentage of market cap is actually higher today than it was last March (the market cap was close to $17.5 Trillion and margin debt at around $290 Billions (or 1.66%). I do not have historical numbers on margin debt as a percentage of market cap, it might be an interesting indicator to look at.

Earlie made the distinction the other day about margin debt that couldn't be met

and what's left... margin calls that have been met up until now.... last group standing... except for the very deep accounts.

i heard about one firm over the weekend that's extending time to large accounts (i.e. saved by the bell rules for hope)... wonder if they will maintain their extensions in a BK...and thusly risk being sued at the same time... anyway... more food for the stew pot.
