In regards to comparing apples to apples, short margin has always been part of the statistics.. Simply stated, margin debt is at an alltime high.. however, it would seem to be common sense that more people are margined long at these low points than were margined long at the top. and anyway, long interest has alway vastly outnumbered short interest..

for an example, just look at the contracts on the new qqq options.. In the first week of trading which I believe was last week ...(may be wrong here) something like 140,000 call contracts were purchased while only 40,000 put contracts were purchased,(these figures are from memory) so if these figures from last week on qqq options are any indication of the margin makeup out there, we still have the vast majority of margin on the long side..

I thought You only needed a margin acct. to short but don't have to be on margin to short a stock?
