Mike,
If Rambus win, they will probably impose 2.5% royalties on DDR and less than 1% on SDRAM, RDRAM royalties are 1.5 to 2 %.
These royalties will be included by the 3 amigos or other MM to their cost of production. but even with these numbers, SDRAM and DDR will cost less to produce than RDRAM

So to answer your questions:

<Why would the "three amigos" want to pay more for manufacturing DDR and SDRAM than they would for Rambus?>
Some possibilities:
1- More market demand SDRAM and DDR ?
2- SDRAM and DDR production cost is lower.
3- More profit on SDRAM and DDR ?
4- Because AMD thinks promoting DDR will help them in their battle against Intel ?

<And if the case is won, wouldn't this set something of a precedent for Via and its sister company Nanya? >

Sure it does, but again, all this will mean is that Via will be paying royalties on DDR chipsets (and SDram), but if DDR is technically better than RDR and easier to produce, as many are claiming today, than they will continue along the DDR road.

Mike:

A stent costs pennies to make but many many dollars to buy. In this respect, and in this respect only, it resembles a microprocessor.

I guess you are feeling better. I thought you had socialized medicine in Britain.

Hi Mike Magee; Re Micron subpoenas Intel...

Micron subpoenas Intel in Rambus suit
Mike Magee, TheRegister, March 19, 2001
While yours truly was ducking from buckets of vitriol being flung by irate Ramboid shareholders, young JC spotted on the Rambus Site that Micron, which also has litigation with Rambus, has issued a subpoena "on custodian of records of Intel Corporation". That happened last week.

Interesting side thingie: Micron has apparently subpoenad Intel for their suit against Rambus. Might be interesting to see how this develops. (Source: Carl Bilow)
