Isn't the purpose of this new chip is for carrier to have the capacity benefit of 1x, at the same time, to offer a very cheap phone for people who only wants voice?

I'm not sure about Unicom...it seemed like they were going to try and market CDMA as an upscale data capable technology.
----------

I suspect this is the plan for large urban areas (like the 10 cities reported to be upgraded to 1x this year).

But the translated articles I noted regarded both performance and especially the efficient use of spectrum as reasons that 95a network is best suited to meet rudimentary communication needs of populace - to meet projections for 2010...

In my view, the 6000 chipset announced today appears most appropriate for this service...

Slacker: You hit an important point. Multi Mode is definitely the key. This chip is reserved for CDMA2000 networks where the conversion from cdmaOne is beginning to take place.

This is the first of several new chipsets that QCOM is going to launch according to the original press release. They indicated the the 6XXX family of chipsets would be designed for multi mode chips. However, it is their custom to make the chipset design announcments for cdma2000 before they announce products for GSM/GPRS related networks.

I would expect to see QCOM follow up with more new chipset designs for UMTS and GSM carriers that employ ZIF technology - the key to multi mode phones.
