HandsOn...You have to have a Margin account, though not necessarily on margin in a short trade. The reason being, if you have 10,000 and short 10,000 worth of stock and it happens to rise 10%, you are now 1000 in the hole which means you are on margin.

You do not pay interest for margin unless the total amount shorted, exceeds the amount of total capital in your account.
