From Walton takes a stroll down memory lane

TSN: What's in your CD player these days?
BW: Jerry Garcia, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, John Lennon and Mick Jagger.

TSN: True or false: Every day you leave your San Diego home, you touch a concert poster you
received from The Grateful Dead?
BW: Yep. Because when things were going really, really bad for me -- my foot was just not getting
better -- The Grateful Dead sent me a big, huge photograph of a concert. They all signed it. It said,
"Get well, Bill. We're all pulling for you. We know you can do it." It was just a totally supportive
message from all the guys in the band, who are some of my absolute best friends. It's a big overhead
shot from a concert. And everybody's dancing out in front. Balloons. People having a grand ol' time.
The great celebration of life that The Grateful Dead and basketball and everything's all about. Then,
right across the drumheads, Mickey Hart, who's one of the drummers, wrote, "Bill, Don't Ever Look
Back." I always stop by for a last moment of inspiration as I step out into the world.

TSN: How many Dead shows did you go to?
BW: Over 600.

TSN: Six-hundred?
BW: Well, I started going in 1969. I went for 26 years. I always tried to get Coach Wooden to come to
a Grateful Dead show with me. He said, "No, but if you'd ever like to go to a Lawrence Welk concert,
I'd be more than happy to come."

TSN: Are they the best band of all-time?
BW: My dream as a kid was to be part of special basketball teams. Mickey Hart told me that his dream
as a kid was to be part of the greatest dance band in history. I think his dreams came true.

TSN: What's your favorite Dead song?
BW: The next one.

TSN: You actually got to play drums with them at a show in Egypt, huh?
BW: Well, I'm a terrible musician. But I love rock 'n' roll. Play it long, loud and fast. More drums.
Lots of guitars. Let's get rockin'.
