A recession must be happening for the markets to go into "crash mode".John Hughes, market analyst at Shields & Co., said the tremendous pessimism emerging in the marketplace -- with down volume trouncing up volume -- suggests the market is heading for the proverbial "washout."

"Until you get fear and panic selling, you won't get a bottom. And you're creating fear with the Nasdaq below 2,000," Hughes remarked. He believes the Dow is the most vulnerable going forward as it has held up relatively well in the face of the Nasdaq's tremendous declines this year.
