why not progressive sales taxes based on ability to pay, so when you buy the mercedes you pay 39.6% while the average Joe pays 7%

As I think about it, a consumption tax such as European or Canadian value added tax, might not be such a bad idea. Perhaps instead of taxing different income classes different rates of consumption tax, which might be burdensome to administer, they could simply tax "luxuries" at a higher rate than they tax necessities.

Perhaps Ian, or one of our other friends from a country which imposes a VAT might tell us how their system works.

You must forgive me, Mike, but I haven't the faintest idea what you are talking about with regard to the State of the Union address.
