Article (based on report last week) : Intel, AMD Slash Prices to Drive Up Demand.
electronicnews.com

Heres the important part for Intel :
Intel is protecting the lower edge of its turf by subjecting the Celeron to price cuts, but interestingly the Pentium III is now appearing in the value segment. Intel can position the Pentium III in two markets because it can fall back on the Pentium 4 in the high-performance market.

Since the introduction of the P4, the momentum has shifted from AMD to Intel.

"Last summer, AMD was pushing the pricing structure, but not after the (introduction of) P4," said Linley Gwennap, principal analyst at The Linley Group, Mountain View, Calif. "Athlon is better-performing than the P4, but I haven't seen that sinking in very much."

An increasing number of analysts believe it's unlikely that AMD will regain the competitive position it enjoyed last year, when the Athlon nosed out the Penitum III in the race to 1GHz. This is primarily because of AMD's strategy of introducing chips inbetween Intel's new generations.
