Ted, this was an excellent post (#134450). Good summation, hopefully it is not glossed over.

Ted, <As for the fear factor, he is president....everything he says has significant impact.>

I think you're giving Bush more credit than he deserves, just to find a bone-to-pick. Bush can't affect consumer confidence with mere words any more than he can affect the number of home runs A-Rod can hit with mere words.

Or do you think this is all part of some underhanded "strategery"? ;-)

Ted,

The biggest factor of all was AG raising interest rates to put a Republican in the White House. He pulled the same stunt in 1994 to get the Congress.

Now he is balking at rate cuts to help out the rich folk's tax cut, and to make sure his rich buds keep their steady income from interest on the national debt coming.

Ted.. Re..He is pushing the tax cut because, like kissing babies, it endears you to the masses quickly, and 'helps' people forget about that ugly time in Nov.<<<<<

That is the dem. story. That their programs are so much better for the people than letting the people decide what to do with their own money., Frankly, if you look at one of Bill's reforms stolen from the republicans, welfare reform, actually helped the poor, by forcing them to help themselves; or do you even now feel that welfare reform was a mistake. Bush is pushing a tax cut because he believes in a minimalist gov. The Dems believe the gov. can be all things to all people. But, as we have seen in Russia and Europe, there is a fine line between helping people and making them dependent, and helping people help themselves.

Then, after conclusion of the election when no post election rally occurred, Bush comes along and says we need a tax cut, saying that the economy is in much more serious condition than he had thought. <<<<

GW was campaigning for a tax cut all during his campaign. The fact that there is now reason to believe we may be in a recession, is even more justification for a tax cut.

Then, after conclusion of the election when no post election rally occurred, Bush comes along and says we need a tax cut, saying that the economy is in much more serious condition than he had thought<<<<

Bull. GW simply stated we might be headed into a recession; the same thing that has been said on CNBC for the past 6 months. AG himself said we are going through a serious slowdown back in Jan. before GW made his remarks.

You are right about a tax cut...it will not determine whether we have a recession or not....and that's why its a needless expenditure of energy and an unwanted distraction at this time.<<<<<<<<

But too high of a tax rate does cause recessions. That is why Kennedy's tax cut and Reagon's both stimulated the economy and got us going again. Too high of a tax rate takes too much money out of the private sector, slows down velocity, increases consumer debt, and leads to a slowdown in consumer spending which causes a recession.

The major difference between a recession and expansion is consumer psychology.....and consumer psychology is worsening.<<<<<<

Why wouldn't it be? Instead of passing a tax cut we need to get the country going again, the dems. are stalling and filibustering. Instead of eliminating corruption and waste, the dems. just want to threaten medicare. There are a lot of gov. programs which can be cut, without cutting education, or defense or SS and medicare. Corporations had to eliminate waste during the 70's and 80's to meet the competition. The gov. should do likewise.

Ted, the tax cut was not initally pushed to help the economy because it was in trouble. When there where some signs that the economy was in trouble GW latched on to those to help sell the tax cut.

As for the fear factor, he is president....everything he says has significant impact.

Presidents say a lot of things. Much of what they say has little impact so it is not correct to say "everything he says has signigicant impact". The comments on the economy might have had a more then miminal impact, but not IMO a major one.

You are right about a tax cut...it will not determine whether we have a recession or not....and that's why its a needless expenditure of energy and an unwanted distraction at this time.

It will help in the long term and it is the right thing to do even without considering its economic impact. I think tax rates should be even lower (andthe tax rules much simpler) then they would be under Bush's plan but this plan is a good start. I think major tax reductions beyond that will have to wait until spending is under control.
