see if you have more than one pppmac.vxd running at the same time... (or if you have more than one file, if so, rename extension on one temporarily and see what happens)

run system file checker...

i saw this and will include it for the heck of it....

"Fatal Exception OE at 28:xx in VxD MSTCP(01). This was called from 0028:xx in VxD PPPMAC(01)
It causes a frozen connection, General Protection Fault, or system failure. If you have a blue error screen and this error message, requiring a system reboot: You will need to download vtcpupd.exe and vipupd.exe to update your TCP & IP drivers. They can be found on our Web page."

most of what i see pertains to w95 and dial-up connections

SYMPTOMS
When you try to connect "Modem not responding (Error 650). For troubleshooting information, click Help.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you install Dial-Up Networking after you install MSN version 2.52.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.

In the Named box, type pppmac.vxd, and then click Find Now.

Rename the Pppmac.vxd file to Pppmac.old. For information about how to rename a file, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type renaming files, and then click Display.

Repeat steps 2-3 to rename each of the following files:

- Splitter.vxd
- Vdhcp.386
- Vip.386
- Vnbt.386
- Vtcp.386
- Winsock.dll
- Wsock.vxd
Right-click the Network Neighborhood icon on the desktop, and then click Properties.

If TCP/IP is installed, click TCP/IP, and then click Properties.

Write down the properties of each TCP/IP setting, click OK, click TCP/IP, and then click Remove. Repeat this step for each installed TCP/IP component. If TCP/IP is not installed, proceed to the next step.

Click Dial-Up Adapter, and then click Remove.

Click OK. If you are prompted to restart the computer, click No.

Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

Double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then click the Windows Setup tab.

In the Components box, click Communications, and then click Details.

Click to clear the Dial-Up Networking check box, and then click OK.

Click OK, close Control Panel, and then restart the computer.
