Flap, I'm just asking so please don't you or anyone else take the following personally. It's directed at the profession as a whole and not to any one person. Could the decline in the ability of students to learn, as evidenced by test scores for the last 3 decades, have anything to do with the teachers joining unions to protect their incompetent brethren? Is this possibly the reason for colleges all over the country having to institute remedial courses in the fundamentals of Readin', Ritin' and Rithmetic? So by the time the students get a BS degree in BS, they can read it? And aren't a large proportion of those college degrees awarded for achieving a level of education about on a par with what one needed 40 yrs ago to get a High School Diploma? Face it; as noble a cause as unionization and the liberal Great Society were, they took a wrong turn along the way and now they are consuming those that they set out to save. It really is a shame and a tragedy. Chas
