em - Aha! Thanks. I haven't seen any discussion of this on the thread. This is another reason that I believe there are some problems with the 3G projections.

Although, a while back when we were discussing regulation, Frank and I kicked around one of Jeff Pulver's stories on the delay of the ITU, apparently favoring the ILECs, and impeding the advancement to universal addressability.

Anyway, the article below takes your position a step further, I think. I believe the emergence of wireless LANs, offering superior data throughput, and running parallel to 2.5/3G networks, are going to eat a lot of the data lunch that 3G proponents think they'll get.

I'm inclined to agree with Ray that Joe SixPack will not want, and will not want to pay for a lot of the gee-whiz features that are planned. For most people, I think a phone that does email, maybe news and weather - relatively easy, bursty data stuff - will be enough: and it will be all that many people want.

The power user will want, say, reliable 256 to 512 Kbps throughput, giving him/her an equivalent to cable/dsl. Those users are going to be prepared to pay, and they are certainly not going to want to manipulate an Excel file, in real time, over a cell phone.

I am cramming a lot of interrelated thoughts in here, and I apologize if I'm not too clear. I'm proposing

- voice over wireless LAN
- high-throughput data over wireless LAN
- market differentiation in wireless usage
- recognition of the danger by ILECs
- the failure of telephony to capture all of the wireless data markets.

I'd appreciate any thoughts on this. The subject seems to be little-discussed on this thread (EM excluded, of course), yet we can see its genesis now.

If the above is not true, or not viable, why?

Regards,

Jim

"“The area I think is really, really hot, is integrating wireless LAN with 3G solutions,” says Marie Bern, investment manager at Speed Ventures, which invested in It’sAlive. “When we get seamless access over wireless LAN, there will be a lot of new issues that have to be addressed.”
