Mag,

>> My line about teachers making 20 mil and sports stars making 50k was just that, a line. It will not happen in my or my childrens lifetimes. I know it, but I can dream.<<

Maybe if the WWF's McMahon could be persuaded to start XBL, XBBL, XSL and a few others to go wih the XFL, your dream might come true. Imagine $50,000 players. A family of 4 able to go to a game for under a $100 bill. sigh... someday maybe... Still won't have $20,000,000 teachers though, unless of course we also end up with XU's. :)

Chas

I think it is reasonable to draw people in at the higher levels, particularly college and perhaps college prep. And I agree that the "skill set" necessary for a good teacher might not emphasize intellect as much as the ability to connect and motivate. But what is a "competitive salary"? If, for example, the current generation of teachers are adequate, by and large, for most students most places, it stands to reason that a "tweak" upwards, say, to half again or double the current average salary would suffice to give us a markedly improved set of teachers. This would especially be true if the money for raises were largely reserved for merit pay, thus providing an additional incentive for excelling, or if they were targeted to areas were it is particularly hard to attract teachers. The main thing is, in any event, that you start from the base and make realistic adjustments, and that is how you arrive at the proper number.......
