Will look for CDs now.

Another wrinkle: My bank accts are in a credit union. I believe they offer FDIC insured CDs but I have to check on that as well.

This is reminding me of what little I know about the saving & loan debacle of the 80s ... wasn't that a similar situation where savers lost their principle?

God, I'm ignorant. Untile I became an investor myself, the whole thing bored me so I paid little attention.

Regret that now.

Thats a scary thought....so, If E-trade were to go under, they could take my cash and stocks and leave me with zilch ?

I read an article last week where one "house" was taking an internal hit to back up there money markets that had fallen below the $1/share level. Not sure how many could afford to do this. Can't remember who it was now.
