What made me sit up and notice this was that my Mom's 75th birthday was the day before Mr. Greenspan's.....they were born just one day apart, back toward the beginning of the market's irrational exuberance of the late 1920's. And I thought about how Mr. Greenspan, coming along a day after my Mom into this world, had manuevered the economy into a state that is causing a lot of angst for my Mom and people of her generation. You and I, sure we hate this market, we've lost a lot or maybe all of our investable cash. But for those born that same week as Mr. Greenspan, it is a far more dangerous market. We can take some solace in the fact that the market always recovers, even from this, that we are still young, can still earn money to replace at least some of what has been lost. We are likely to still have our health, our children, the stuff we really need, for a long time. But what of those who, like my Mom and Mr. Greenspan, turned 75 last week? What if they were invested in the market? What if the Dow really does tank by 30 or 40 percent of more? (My Mom did not enjoy much of the tech runup because with one or two exceptions she was in conservative Dow stocks -- but now her portfolio is taking a hit too). She is now worried about things that two years back she wasn't worried about. I wonder what Mr. Greenspan's legacy will be? A year ago, he was a hero.....I dug up this article about the celebration of his 74th birthday:wordarchive.com I hope we will feel like bringing the man a cake for his 76th birthday, or at least his 80th birthday.
