INRANGE and IBM Team with iT-AUSTRIA to Deploy International FICON Storage Area Network (SAN) IN-VSN FC/9000 Director Instrumental in Building Leading-Edge SAN for iT-AUSTRIA LUMBERTON, N.J., April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The first large-scale production storage network utilizing FICON has been implemented by iT-AUSTRIA, which selected INRANGE (Nasdaq: INRG - news) Technologies' FC/9000(TM) Fibre Channel Director as the switching infrastructure for its new, high performance SAN. FICON is IBM's interconnect technology that lets users migrate ESCON-based mainframes to the faster, more efficient storage network links afforded by today's fibre channel technology.
As Austria's largest Information Technology services provider, iT-AUSTRIA supports all the information processing services primarily for Bank Austria, Creditanstalt, Erste Bank, SPARDAT and the Austrian Saving banks. It relies upon the FC/9000 ? the industry's most scalable and highest performance SAN technology ? to direct the flow of up to 2 terabytes of data per day, stored on tandem IBM 3494 Tape Libraries.
To help ensure continuous availability of the bank's information systems, iT-AUSTRIA implemented a Geographically Dispersed Parallel Sysplex (GDPS) solution across three locations, over six IBM 9672 servers. GDPS technology helps to manage databases, processors, network resources and storage subsystems by automatically mirroring critical data and balancing workloads between sites. The high-availability design of INRANGE's FC/9000 Director was central in supporting iT-AUSTRIA's mission-critical SAN environment. The successful FICON implementation is the result of the INRANGE/IBM alliance announced last year, whereby IBM is reselling INRANGE's FC/9000 through their channels for FICON and open systems SANs.
``The Magstar 3590 A60 Tape Controller, the first native FICON storage subsystem, provides significant customer value,'' said Brenda Zawatski, VP, Removable Media Storage Solutions for IBM's Storage Systems Group. ``It lowers infrastructure costs by allowing multiple ESCON channels to be replaced with a single FICON channel, while delivering improved performance for tape backup applications.''
Scalable up to 128 ports and beyond, the FC/9000 is the industry's highest capacity Fibre Channel Director. It is part of the of IN-VSN(TM) family of Virtual Storage Networking solutions, which provides the infrastructure for building large-scale storage networks that can be extended globally. The Magstar 3590 Tape Controller is designed for attaching 3590 drives to ESCON® and FICON channels on host systems for true enterprise-class backup and recovery implementations. It extends the performance of tape operations with the highest sustained I/O and transfer rates to create the highest-performance enterprise SAN yet.
``Very large-scale networks for enterprise customers with S/390 and zSeries servers have arrived,'' stated INRANGE Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Charles Foley. ``We are positioned with our partner IBM to replicate the customer success that we have enjoyed at iT-AUSTRIA and assist other users in capitalizing on the bandwidth and productivity benefits of FICON implementations.''
