It seems to me that the time for the type of promiscuous visioneering and technolust exemplified by Gilder has come and gone. It's clobberin' time.

The $1.6 billion in pre-tax savings will come from the digitization of work processes and from conducting nearly $14 billion in Web-based auctions, GE said. It expects its sales over the Internet to grow to more than $15 billion in 2001.


GE said synergies between itself and Honeywell, which it has agreed to buy for almost $40 billion, should exceed $3 billion, more than twice the initial estimate.....

The companies competing directly with GE are now faced with the prospects of going up against an increasingly more efficient and effective competitor. GE is also a widely emulated company whose management practices will undoubtedly influence even those who do not compete with it.
